The Primary Care Cancer Champions (PCCC) initiative continues to transform how patients access support and information close to home, throughout Northamptonshire.

💡 What is the PCCC Initiative?

The PCCC programme, led by Sally Miah (Macmillan Information Outreach Project Manager), aims to embed cancer support directly within primary care settings. By training and equipping staff—ranging from social prescribers to practice managers—to become Cancer Champions, the initiative ensures that patients, carers, and families receive timely, compassionate, and localised support.

📊 Impact So Far

• 75% of practices in Northamptonshire now have a Primary Care Cancer Champion.
• 87 colleagues attended workshops, with 50 completing all elements to become certified Champions.
• 2 new Cancer Support Groups have been established in primary care settings.
• Champions are actively signposting patients to Macmillan services, offering emotional support, and even organising wellbeing walks.

🧠 Training & Sustainability

To ensure long-term success:

• Training webinars have been recorded and made available on YouTube.
• A new e-learning package is hosted on the Trust’s Digital Learning Platform.
• The Northamptonshire Cancer Improvement Group will maintain oversight with biannual reviews.

Debbie Edgar, a Cancer Champion at Studfall Medical Centre, shares:

“I understand that there is much more to the cancer journey than receiving treatment. Sometimes a friendly ear and time is all that is needed.”

Her lived experience brings empathy and authenticity to the role, highlighting the emotional and practical challenges patients face.

🧘 Community & Support

The Primary Care Cancer Champions Community Club held in June 2025 brought together Champions for a day of learning, networking, and wellbeing. With sessions on cancer screening, emotive conversations, and personalised care, 98% of attendees found the content helpful or very helpful.
